Intermittent Water Supply Impacts on Distribution System Biofilms and Water Quality

چکیده

Intermittent water supplies (IWS) are routinely experienced by drinking distribution systems around the world, either due to ongoing operational practices or one off interruptions. During IWS events changing conditions may impact endemic biofilms leading hydraulic mobilisation of organic and inorganic materials attached pipes walls with a resulting degradation in quality. To study on microbiological physico-chemical characteristics water, an experimental full-scale chlorinated pipe facility was operated over 60 days under realistic allow for biofilm growth investigate flow resumption behaviour post-IWS 6, 48 144 hours. Turbidity metal concentrations showed significant responses restarting, indicating changes, greater than 6 hours generating more turbidity hence discolouration risk. The increase pressure when system restarted substantial total cell counts, while subsequent increases led elevated metals concentrations. SUVA254 monitoring indicated that shorter times non-water supply increased risk aromatic compounds disinfection-by-products formation. DNA sequencing increasing resulted relative abundance potential pathogenic microorganisms, such as Mycobacterium, Sphingomonas, fungi Penicillium Cladosporium. Overall findings indicate result higher proportion compounds, which can potentially react chlorine However, minimising times, biofilm-associated impacts be reduced, yet these complex ecosystems much remains understood about how microbial interactions managed best ensure continued safe supply.

Assessment of water supply system and water quality of Lighvan village using water safety plan

Background: Continuous expansion of potable water pollution sources is one of the main concerns of water suppliers, therefore measures such as water safety plan (WSP), have been taken into account to control these sources of pollution. The aim of this study was to identify probable risks and threatening hazards to drinking water quality in Lighvan village along with assessment of bank filtratio...

Optimizing Intermittent Water Supply in Urban Pipe Distribution Networks

In many urban areas of the developing world, piped water is supplied only intermittently, as valves direct water to different parts of the water distribution system at different times. The flow is transient, and may transition between free-surface and pressurized, resulting in complex dynamical features with important consequences for water suppliers and users. Here, we develop a computational ...

Biofilms Impact on Drinking Water Quality

A paradigm shift currently occurs in microbiology, with significant impacts in a variety of environmental, medical and industrial applications. The old misconception of free floating microbes is invalidated by a different knowledge pattern: the great majority of terrestrial microorganisms live in communities associated to surfaces, called biofilms (Costerton et al, 1987; Flemming, 2008; Muntean...

Biofilms from a Brazilian water distribution system include filamentous fungi.

Filamentous fungi in drinking water can block water pipes, can cause organoleptic biodeterioration, and are a source of pathogens. There are increasing reports of the involvement of the organisms in biofilms. This present study describes a sampling device that can be inserted directly into pipes within water distribution systems, allowing biofilm formation in situ. Calcofluor White M2R staining...

Characterization of fungal biofilms within a municipal water distribution system.

Biofilms of a municipal water distribution system were characterized to assess the occurrence of fungi within surface matrixes. Densities of filamentous fungi ranged from 4.0 to 25.2 CFU cm(-2), whereas yeast densities ranged from 0 to 8.9 CFU cm(-2). Observations by scanning electron microscopy further suggested that spores, not hyphae or vegetative cells, comprised the primary source of viabl...
